Medieval music ensemble Alkemie premieres an old tale perfect for a spring evening. Almost seven hundred years ago, a London contemporary of the young Chaucer recorded a Celtic-inspired version of ancient Orpheus myth in which our hero visits the realm of the Fairies rather than the spirits of the underworld. Ben Matus’s arrangement of the Middle English legend reworks 14th-century English sources to set Sir Orfeo to music.

Concert dates/locations:
Friday, May 2, 7:30pm

All Saints Episcopal
230 E 60th Street, NYC 10022

Saturday, May 3, 7:30pm
Jalopy Theatre

The Ann Arbor Recorder Society is holding an in-person recorder workshop on May 3, 2025 and you're invited to attend!   The theme of this five-hour workshop is When Birds Do Sing, In Springtime, In Springtime:  Music of the English Madrigal School.  We'll be led in four-plus hours of music-making by Ann Arbor's Corinne Schat, a local recorder professional and teacher.  We hope you'll join us.

Workshop Description:  An intense flowering of the musical madrigal came to fruition during the time of The English Madrigal School from 1588 to 1627.  Our workshop features works by John Farmer, John Wilbye, Orlando Gibbons, John Bennet, William Byrd and Thomas Morley, whose contributions to this musical form are filled with highly expressive depictions of poetic texts employing many examples of vivid word painting.

This music is bursting with joy, humor, and passion!  In order to bring these compositions to life, we will work on both general ensemble skills: how to start, how to end, score analysis, effective rehearsal strategies, and especially on skills that meet the unique challenges of the recorder: articulation, tuning, tone, and playing in sync with each other.

We will get results that sparkle and make an impact!

Step into a world of medieval romance and intrigue as Collectio Musicorum brings to life the legendary tale of Jaufre Rudel, a 12th-century troubadour whose songs of unrequited love continue to inspire across the ages.
According to legend, Rudel fell deeply in love with the Countess of Tripoli without ever having seen her. Driven by longing, he set sail for Lebanon to be with her, only to perish upon his arrival. His story, intertwined with the poetry and music of the troubadours, captures the spirit of devotion, artistry, and adventure.

Experience the music of Jaufre Rudel—all his surviving compositions—along with selections by his contemporary Marcabru and other troubadours. Performed in the mystical ambiance of the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art, this is an evening where history, legend, and music converge.

The concert will be performed by Alexander Longnecker, tenor; Christopher Morrongiello, lute; Jeff Dailey and Richard Walker, recorders.

Ludwig Senfl’s output as a composer of German lieder (songs) has long been celebrated for its sheer beauty, diversity and refinement. This seminar session examines simple homophonic song settings (especially Senfl’s catchy May songs!), contrapuntal tenor songs, clever quodlibets combining two or more songs in one composition, as well as charming songs without words called “Carmen.” It does so from a recorder perspective that will allow for many opportunities to play along recordings of this engaging repertory from the early 16th century. All levels of players are welcome! SATB Recorders, A=440hz. Register Here!

The Highland Park Recorder Society is offering a Consort Studio in central New Jersey, monthly sessions in ensemble playing for intermediate and above recorder players to play with one another and other instruments under a skilled conductor, with professional accompaniment.

Music Director Steven Russell will lead a “Consort Studio” ensemble of recorder players in an exploration of Baroque Trio Sonatas through rehearsal, instruction and demonstration and end with the players opportunity to play solo alto with a professional ensemble of harpsichord and violin, flute, or oboe depending on the music. Focusing on ensemble skills, this will take place in a welcoming, intimate environment that encourages people to feel comfortable to get up and play.
