Event Description
The Ann Arbor Recorder Society is holding an in-person recorder workshop on May 3, 2025 and you're invited to attend!   The theme of this five-hour workshop is When Birds Do Sing, In Springtime, In Springtime:  Music of the English Madrigal School.  We'll be led in four-plus hours of music-making by Ann Arbor's Corinne Schat, a local recorder professional and teacher.  We hope you'll join us.

Workshop Description:  An intense flowering of the musical madrigal came to fruition during the time of The English Madrigal School from 1588 to 1627.  Our workshop features works by John Farmer, John Wilbye, Orlando Gibbons, John Bennet, William Byrd and Thomas Morley, whose contributions to this musical form are filled with highly expressive depictions of poetic texts employing many examples of vivid word painting.

This music is bursting with joy, humor, and passion!  In order to bring these compositions to life, we will work on both general ensemble skills: how to start, how to end, score analysis, effective rehearsal strategies, and especially on skills that meet the unique challenges of the recorder: articulation, tuning, tone, and playing in sync with each other.

We will get results that sparkle and make an impact!

NOTE:  University of Michigan Commencement exercises will be taking place at/near Michigan Stadium on May 3, with the main ceremony scheduled for 10am-noon.  It would be wise to avoid the Stadium area when driving to Zion Lutheran on the west side of town.
