The Highland Park Recorder Society is offering a Consort Studio in central New Jersey, monthly sessions in ensemble playing for intermediate and above recorder players to play with one another and other instruments under a skilled conductor, with professional accompaniment.
Music Director Steven Russell will lead a “Consort Studio” ensemble of recorder players in an exploration of Baroque Trio Sonatas through rehearsal, instruction and demonstration and end with the players opportunity to play solo alto with a professional ensemble of harpsichord and violin, flute, or oboe depending on the music. Focusing on ensemble skills, this will take place in a welcoming, intimate environment that encourages people to feel comfortable to get up and play. We will have opportunities to warm up on Renaissance music with SATB recorders, so bring all sizes.

The workshop will explore tunes from our Renaissance Fiddling Tunes for Two book. These 28 traditional Renaissance tunes are arranged for two players, with chords for back-up musicians. Program notes and a source list are included.
"A Starry, Sacred Banquet"
With the glorious acoustic of our playing space in mind, we will bookend this session with two sacred pieces by the extraordinary collaborative pair Thomas Tallis, nearing the end of his illustrious career, and William Byrd, in his 30s and fast becoming the Queen’s favorite. Both O sacrum convivium (O Sacred Banquet) and Siderum rector (Ruler of the Stars) come from the Cantiones sacrae(London, 1575), a publication of thirty-four sacred works by the two composers, each of whom contributed seventeen pieces celebrating the seventeenth anniversary of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Between these two masterpieces will be a six-part instrumental Pavane and, if time allows, the Galliard by Byrd as well as a lovely new arrangement of the shape note tune Star in the East by Will Ayton.
WHERE: Church of Saint Mary the Virgin, 145 West 46th Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues in Manhattan. We meet in Saint Joseph’s Hall, a side chapel of Saint Mary’s. Located in a brick building to the left – or west – of the main church, the entranceway is distinguished by the street number 145 prominently displayed on the door. A colorful sign will also identify the spot. Accessible via the 1/2/3/B/D/F/Q/R/N trains.

Ring in the new year (a few weeks late) with festive Holborne dances and other rousing and cheery pieces of the Renaissance and Baroque. In addition to Holborne’s “The New-Yeeres Gift”, we will experience some fireworks from Handel’s famous suite and play a setting of a popular Renaissance tune originally featured in a Medici wedding of 1589.
