Vergine Bella - “I am earth and you the queen of heaven”
Composers of the 15th-17th centuries were inspired by the poetic works of 14th c. Italian writer and humanist scholar Francesco Petrarca (1304-1374). This class explores various musical settings of Vergine Bella, the final poem in Petrarch’s collection “Rerum vulgarium fragmenta” (“Fragments of common things”), also simply referred to as Il Canzionere (“The Song Book”). Il Canzionere comprises 366 Italian poems, and is a collection of poetry composed over 40 years expressing unrequited love to a certain “Laura” - Petrarch even continued writing love poetry to her after her death.
We will play settings of Vergine Bella in 2-5 parts by Guillaume Dufay, Vincenzo Ruffo, Palestrina, and Cipriano da Rore, among others. We will also explore a few analytical tools to help us understand what sets these different versions apart. As we have quite a lot of music to play, please prepare a chosen part or two for each piece. In terms of the complexity of the individual parts, the Dufay setting (especially the cantus) might require a little extra preparation.
for penny whistlers with a D whistle
Each of the 7 music modes evoke a different mood and offers the player opportunities to explore unique melodic pathways. A better understanding of modes can help us appreciate what a 6 hole whistle is capable of.
The English composer and organist William Boyce (1711-1779) was well respected and immensely popular in his lifetime, but his symphonies and overtures were sadly neglected for many years after his death.
Alaric Posey invites us to sample some of Boyce's musical legacy.
This is a HYBRID meeting - you choose whether you wish to attend in person or over Zoom. Each session begins with easier scores and moves gradually to more challenging materials.
Our meetings are 90 minutes, starting at:
2:00 Pacific, 3:00 Mountain, 4:00 Central, and 5:00 Eastern

Scores will be available for registered participants a week ahead of each class. Play-along files will be created on recorders.
Each zoom meeting will be recorded and will stay available to view on demand until one full month after the final class of the series.
Medieval Mondays will take place on zoom on the following dates, always from 12:30-2:00 pm Eastern:

The workshop will explore tunes from our Irish Fiddle Tunes for Two book. This collection features 32 reels, hornpipes, polkas, jigs, and waltzes, arranged for two instruments, with chord symbols for guitar accompaniment. There’s a source list included, just in case you haven’t had enough Irish tunes.
Anne Timberlake offers a lively, performance-driven exploration of the many ways love can falter, featuring soul-stirring works by Purcell, Gesualdo, Brahms, and more. It's the perfect antidote for the aftermath of Valentine's Day!
To fully enjoy the class, participants should be fluent on C instruments (soprano or tenor). It’s advised (but not mandatory) to have attended the previous ‘Jazz Recorder?’ workshop held in August 2024.
There are two playing levels for the morning and afternoon breakout sessions: Intermediate and Advanced. Participation is open to players from low-intermediate to advanced levels. We highly encourage first-time music workshop attendance. Mentoring for lower level players is available from more experienced players during the sessions. Other "soft" instruments, such as viols and harps, are also welcome.
There will be two playing levels to choose from: Intermediate and Advanced. The SFRS workshops always encourage participation of players of all levels, and we highly encourage first-time workshop attendance.

The Highland Park Recorder Society is offering a Consort Studio in central New Jersey, monthly sessions in ensemble playing for intermediate and above recorder players to play with one another and other instruments under a skilled conductor, with professional accompaniment.
Music Director Steven Russell will lead a “Consort Studio” ensemble of recorder players in an exploration of Baroque Trio Sonatas through rehearsal, instruction and demonstration and end with the players opportunity to play solo alto with a professional ensemble of harpsichord and violin, flute, or oboe depending on the music. Focusing on ensemble skills, this will take place in a welcoming, intimate environment that encourages people to feel comfortable to get up and play. We will have opportunities to warm up on Renaissance music with SATB recorders, so bring all sizes.
