The Music of Bach

Bach’s music is a perennial favorite. The pieces we’ll play will feature parts that are straight-forward and parts that are challenging, and rather than it being a quick skate-through of a large number of pieces, we will be doing a deep dive into just a few, allowing those who want to play each of the parts to do so, while also giving those who prefer to play multiple repetitions while staying on the same line that opportunity too. If you’re up for a challenge, here’s your chance!  And if you just want to be a part of some wonderful music, this is a workshop for you too.

Started during the pandemic, our Festivus celebration led by Colin & Andrea MacDonald has become enormously popular and is now a BCRS tradition. Think of it as a playing meeting but with a LOT of fun and holiday celebration mixed in. Colin is already working on compiling the music - and it'll be a surprise so you'll just have to wait. And did I mention that it's free? It's our holiday gift to you! More details here.

This class takes an analytical approach to Baroque pieces, exploring how rhetoric is integral to the art of storytelling within the music. We’ll discuss the structure of the pieces, the relationship between melody and harmony in storytelling, and how this relates to the articulations used. We will start with vocal music before moving on to pieces like Telemann’s Fantasia I, Philidor’s Recorder Sonata, and even journey back in time to Van Eyck’s variations.
