THE THREE MUSKETEERS
Hesperus brings their famous “cine-concert” to Boston and accompanies the classic silent film “The Three Musketeers” starring Douglas Fairbanks. The year is 1625, and swashbuckling swordsman D’Artagnan joins forces with the Three Musketeers to save the French Queen’s honor from the machinations of the cruel Cardinal Richelieu. This 1921 melodrama, an adaptation of Alexander Dumas’ 1844 novel, comes alive with a real-time soundtrack of French renaissance dances, folk songs, and theatrical chansons by Gervaise, Compère, Sermisy and others performed on period instruments.

Our splendid faculty will include renowned Dutch recorder virtuosa Eva Legene, Brazilian energy ball Cléa Galhano, the scholarly and handsome Mark Davenport, beloved Seattle departees Miyo Aoki and Jonathan Oddie, long time viol favorites David Morris and Mary Springfels, and we welcome the incredibly gifted percussionist, Tacoma local Antonio Gomez.
The Port Townsend Early Music Workshop was founded by Music Director Emeritus Peter Seibert in 1983. It initially took place at Fort Worden in Port Townsend, from whence it got its name. It now occurs in July of odd-numbered years in Tacoma, WA, on the campus of the University of Puget Sound.
This week-long workshop combines comfortable accommodations and delicious meals in a beautiful setting to create a space where musicians can eliminate distractions as they dive into music and camaraderie. It offers an exciting week-long opportunity for players of recorder, viol, and percussion, as well as singers. All will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the music of the Middle Ages, Renaissance, French Baroque and Contemporary eras, as well as Brazilian music and much, much more. Most classes are geared towards players with reliable technique and reading skills, but there is always a place for those who feel they are less experienced.
While total immersion in a week-long residential workshop away from home is the most beneficial for learning and shared camaraderie, we understand that taking a full week off can be challenging for some families. This year we are implementing the opportunity to audit individual classes for those who can’t take the entire week off. Commuter participants can now choose between participating in individual classes in either the morning or afternoon as well as the full week. Lobke Sprenkeling Summer Course Online 2023
Tailored to your level - Weekends July 15-16 and 22-23
Two different classes of 1.5h this year: Beginner/Low-Intermediate, High-Intermediate Advanced/Professional.
There will be two Time Zones: European/American Time Zone and Australasian Time Zone.
*Last year, I noticed that advanced Spanish speaking recorder players had enough knowledge of English to join us in the English version. Therefore, in Spanish I will only offer a Beginner/Low-Intermediate class.
This is how we’ll do it:
In each class we will focus on a specific topic as specified below, with direct application to your own repertoire and your specific needs as an active student. In this way you will progress in your chosen repertoire, working on different aspects of the same piece while attending to your particular technical-musical needs. This year, instead of a Facebook group, I've set up a community space at nas.io, which is much more independent. Here, you'll be able to drop a question outside of class.

Breath is Life—Life is MusicIt is vast understatement to say that our breathing affects the way we sound. When recorder players play vocal music the phrasing is built right in. But what about instrumental music without breath marks? Recorders players can use some contextual clues and basic performance practice knowledge to make better decisions about where to breathe. When we breathe life into our music, the experience is so much more meaningful for the players and listener alike!
Our faculty include: Annette Bauer, Jennifer Carpenter, Inga Funck, Greta Haug-Hryziw, Jody Miller, Peter Maund, and Katherine Heater. The workshop is held at the lovely campus of St. Mary's College in Moraga, CA this year, which is a short drive from Berkeley, Oakland, and San Francisco, CA and easily accessible from both Oakland and San Francisco airport.

For the July NAVRS playing meeting, Phil Hollar will take us on a little journey. It’s mid-summer and vacation travel is in full swing. It’s the perfect time for us to explore music with a traveling theme. History is full of people on the move, sometimes individually and sometimes en masse. Sometimes voluntarily and sometimes by force. This history is reflected in the music that these people left us. Journey with us on this musical voyage. You won’t even have to pack a suitcase!
