Event Description
Mark your calendars!  The next Port Townsend Early Music Workshop is back in person for 2023. It will be held July 9-15, 2023.  Once again the workshop will take place at the lovely University of Puget Sound in Tacoma.  This will be the 40th anniversary year of the founding of the Port Townsend Early Music Workshop.

Our splendid faculty will include renowned Dutch recorder virtuosa Eva Legene, Brazilian energy ball Cléa Galhano, the scholarly and handsome Mark Davenport, beloved Seattle departees Miyo Aoki and Jonathan Oddie, long time viol favorites David Morris and Mary Springfels, and we welcome the incredibly gifted percussionist, Tacoma local Antonio Gomez.

The Port Townsend Early Music Workshop was founded by Music Director Emeritus Peter Seibert in 1983.  It initially took place at Fort Worden in Port Townsend, from whence it got its name.  It now occurs in July of odd-numbered years in Tacoma, WA, on the campus of the University of Puget Sound.

This week-long workshop combines comfortable accommodations and delicious meals in a beautiful setting to create a space where musicians can eliminate distractions as they dive into music and camaraderie.  It offers an exciting week-long opportunity for players of recorder, viol, and percussion, as well as singers. All will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the music of the Middle Ages, Renaissance, French Baroque and Contemporary eras, as well as Brazilian music and much, much more.  Most classes are geared towards players with reliable technique and reading skills, but there is always a place for those who feel they are less experienced.

While total immersion in a week-long residential workshop away from home is the most beneficial for learning and shared camaraderie, we understand that taking a full week off can be challenging for some families.  This year we are implementing the opportunity to audit individual classes for those who can’t take the entire week off. Commuter participants can now choose between participating in individual classes in either the morning or afternoon as well as the full week.  Full details are on our website and are being updated, so keep checking back!
