Got style? French Baroque music is often described as subtle, tender, delicate, elegant, etc. How does stylish ornamentation enhance French music's sweetness, vigor and beauty? How do les agréments turn it into such a refined language? We'll first learn from Hotteterre's many helpful examples and then apply ornaments to undecorated pieces by Lully and others. Allons-y!

The Old Avoca Schoolhouse in Avoca, Nebraska will be streaming three on line workshops featuring tunes by Scottish fiddler, J.S. Skinner from the Greenblatt & Seay publication Skinner Tunes for Two.  These sessions are designed for violins, violas, cellos, basses, mandolins, and soprano recorder.

The Skinner Tunes for Two features 40 tunes by the great Scottish fiddler/composer/dancing master, J.S. Skinner (August 5, 1843 – March 17, 1927). In his own words: “The great work of my life has been composing music for the people of Scotland. The music that reaches and lives in the hearts of the people is the music that they whistle or sing at their daily toil or in their hours of recreation, that the mother croons o’er the cradle, and that accompanies her children, a joyous companion, through life.”

The Workshops will be on Tuesday, July 16, 7 PM, Central Time, Wednesday, July 17, 10 AM, Central Time, and Friday, July 19, 7 PM, Central Time.

Different tunes will be played at each session.

We will read, play, and discuss various survival skills for these charming pieces.  A treble clef version of the sheet music for the tunes being played will be displayed on the screen during the workshop.

There is limited enrollment, and pre-registration is required.  The cost for each workshop is $10.00. The cost of each optional book is $15.00 (includes shipping if ordered with workshop registration).
