If you are a good sight reader, you may wonder if there is any advantage in learning to play by ear. While you may not be interested in tossing the sheet music away, adding the ability to play by ear is a great addition to your musical toolbox.

Knowing the music you are playing by ear gives you the freedom to look up from the page to connect with your ensemble partners and your conductor. It provides security in case you get lost in a score and, in addition, not needing to follow the score as closely, your mind is free to put attention into the phrasing, articulations and musicality of your playing. It also provides the mental headspace necessary to creating your own ornamentations.

In this 8 session class, certified Suzuki teacher, Andrea MacDonald, will get your feet wet in learning to play by ear. Using functional ear training, and a step by step approach to recognizing intervals and working out melodies, you will quickly progress from simple folk songs to Mozart and Bach.

Students will need to purchase practice recordings and to download a free app from either the Apple or Android store. If you have questions or wonder if this class is appropriate for you, please call Andrea at 604-339-3375 or send an email to recorderwithandrea@gmail.com

Cathedral Village, 600 East Cathedral Road, Philadelphia, PA
Playing begins at 10:00 AM.

We're gathering in Cathedral Hall, which is located across from the entrance to the main building. Please arrive in plenty of time to find suitable parking, greet friends, and set up your instruments so we can start playing promptly at 10 AM. Visitors are welcome.
For those who can't join in person, we'll be streaming our playing session over Zoom. The Zoom meeting will open at 9:30 AM and we'll start playing at 10 AM. Members will receive a Zoom link via email, usually one day before we meet.

The Good Morning, Herr Senfl playlist is built around three German songs by Ludwig Senfl. They all celebrate the early morning hours. At the same time, they are part of the playlist's three quodlibets in which Senfl combines the morning songs' melodies with other well-known tunes of the time. A beautifully conceived Fantasia à 3 is Senfl's instrumental contribution to this month's playlist. And triumphant Intrada plus playful Gagliarda from Hans Leo Hassler's Lustgarten collection form the bookends of it.

“That Old Song and Dance”

In the February meeting, Suzanne Ferguson will continue our exploration of mid-16th century vocal music from the Franco-Flemish/Italian tradition she began a year ago, but with the addition of a set of Italian Dances by Francesco Bendusi published in 1553.  Sopranos and altos, have you been practicing the Renaissance-style ornamentation given out by Sierra Norris a month ago?  Here’s your chance to try it out!  We’ll have fun putting together “arrangements” of the music and learn a little more about the composers and musical traditions of the late Renaissance.

NOTE: The Consort Book will NOT be required, but if you want to practice ahead, we will be including #20, “Io son mi giovanetta” by Domenico Ferrabosco.

Suzanne Ferguson studied recorder in classes with Erich Katz in the 1960’s; and with Michael Lynn at the Oberlin Baroque Performance Institute in the 1980s and 90s. She was on the National Board of the American Recorder Society in the early 1980s and has been active in recorder society chapters in Santa Barbara, Columbus OH, Detroit, and Fort Myers, FL. She frequently reviews new recorder music for American Recorder.

Held at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 602 N Wilmot Road at 5th Street. There is plenty of parking in the NW parking lot under the solar panels. Park and walk around the north end of the church to the east, and meet in the Smith Parish Hall.
