Musical Time Travel - Introduction to Music of the Middle Ages!
Are you curious about Western music from before ca. 1450? We will play selections of pieces originating from the 12th through the early 15th centuries, discovering some of the distinct styles, forms, and composers along the way. We’ll also touch on melodic modes, structural forms distinguishing sacred and secular music, rhythmic features, the role of improvisation, and instrument-specific medieval iconography - all things that are essential if you want to perform medieval repertoire. While the vast world of medieval music is too large to cover in one session, you can get a first glimpse into this beautiful repertoire that is as timeless as it is time specific!
Add structure to your practice routine! After doing the warm ups together, you will be inspired to practice on your own.
Each half-hour class will feature 15 minutes of breathing, tone, tonguing, or coordination warm ups for all levels; as well as 15 minutes of advanced technique taken from excerpts in baroque repertoire.
Cost: 5 Classes for $100

Learn how to add a well-turned tour de chant, an elegant port de voix, and more essential ornaments to your French Baroque playing. Geared toward upper intermediate to advanced recorder players.

Are you curious about the origins of our Western modern notation system? How was music written down in the 16th century? Would you like to know how to differentiate longa, breve, semibreve, and minim? Are you up for a fun challenge playing from historical clefs? And what about those ligatures?
There is no time like the present to dip your toes (and fingers) into the wonderful world of original notation, specifically mensural notation, the system primarily used during the 14th-16th centuries. Being able to read from the original greatly enhances our understanding of how the music we love works and can give new insights for our performance practice. One might compare this process to how reading a work of literature in its original language reveals a world of nuances hidden in even the best of translations.
Sign up for this introductory notation class of four weekly virtual sessions starting in October 2023! Our sessions will focus on reading and playing practice. We will work from easily accessible 16th century sources. We will take baby steps, and I am available to answer all of your questions. Music and recordings will be provided and can be used for your individual practice at home between sessions. Open to all instruments and singers. All levels welcome - basic abilities on your instrument/voice and basic music-reading skills are a prerequisite. Recordings of the live sessions are available to view for the duration of the course - if you miss a class you can catch up!

John is from the Atlanta area and recently moved to Candler, N.C. In high school he learned the recorder and played in the first incarnation of the Early Music Consort at Emory University under George Kelischek. He attended Middlebury College in Vermont and then earned an MA in Musicology from the University of Michigan, where he was assistant director of the Early Music Collegium. John made his main career as a high school teacher in Gwinnett County, GA, where he taught German, Latin, computer science, drama, and band. From 1985-2000 he returned part-time to Emory University to direct the Early Music Consort, in which he had participated as a teenager.
John’s mission now is to use his knowledge and experience to spread the joys of music, especially early music and recorder technique, to the community and younger generation.

In the mid-1990s Karin Röhrig published a collection of pentatonic songs for the soprano recorder with the poetic title ..und die Flöte verwandelt den Wind in ein Lied... (...and the flute turns the wind into a song...). The phrase is part of a short poem Karin wrote that beautifully speaks of how a song's sound moves and connects hearts, more than any word could ever do. It all inspired the program for NAVRS that loosely revolves around Wind, or Air in Motion.
The playlist for the October playing session is going to include a medieval song referring to Boreas, Greek god of the north wind, as well as two madrigals by Orlande de Lassus and Michael Cavendish with references to Greek wind deities. Further on the playlist will be a Passecaille by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, an Handel Air, and a weathercock fugue by the Brazilian composer Fernando Mattos. A canon in 16 parts by Hans Ulrich Staeps, dedicated to my former recorder teacher in Germany, will wrap up the playlist.
