FOUR TUESDAYS, NOON-1:30PM
APRIL 11 - MAY 2, ET (Zoom)

What makes a good ECD musician? Someone who can bring the tune alive; who knows its history from first printing to the most recent interpretations; who listens and responds to the other musicians, as well as to the caller and the dancers. Being able to improvise in whatever range, inventing ornaments, creating countermelodies, accompaniments, bass divisions and harmony parts, is invaluable.

This class teaches the basic skills necessary to be a first-rate ECD musician. Each week we'll look at 2-3 tunes from one of the 18 Dancing Master editions from 1651-1728. We'll analyze their structure, phrasing, harmony, melody and rhythm and discuss how the tune and the choreography mesh; we'll practice learning the tune by ear, and then we'll improvise the different elements in the above list. Before class you'll get a lead sheet of the tune and chords plus some suggested additional parts, and MP3s to play along with.
After each class you'll receive a class video. 40% discussion, 60% playing.
$20 per class, $80 total. Scholarships available.

4 CLASSES, EITHER MONDAYS at 7 pm (APRIL 17-MAY 8) or THURSDAYS at NOON (APRIL 20-MAY 11), ET (Zoom)

The Contenance angloise, or English manner, is a distinctive style of polyphony developed in 15th c. England which uses full, rich harmonies based on the third and sixth. It was highly influential in the fashionable Burgundian court of Phillip the Good (where Dufay was a court composer). This 4-week module continues our quest, which has been transformed from "How do we ornament medieval songs?" into "How do we ornament early renaissance songs?" Our goal is still to identify the ornaments within the songs, study them and devise a way.
    * First, we find, collect and categorize the melodic ornamentation in 15th c. English and Burgundian chansons by Dufay, Dunstaple and others. Text setting and melismas give us important clues.
    * Next, we analyze how the ornaments are used in the tunes by isolating them in ornament charts, and simplifying the melody to see where they were originally added.
    * Finally, by practicing the ornaments in the chart and putting them in various old and new locations, we'll practice creating our own spontaneous ornamentation.
$20 per class, $80 total. Scholarships available.
