The Next Level Recorder Retreat is a workshop aimed toward recorder players at intermediate level and above who want to immerse themselves in technique, special topic classes, and consort sessions that will help them improve their playing skills and musicianship. Our aim is to provide the tools you need to play music expressively, with facility and passion. | 2/3/2025 | Presented by Annette Bauer Vergine Bella - “I am earth and you the queen of heaven” We will play settings of Vergine Bella in 2-5 parts by Guillaume Dufay, Vincenzo Ruffo, Palestrina, and Cipriano da Rore, among others. We will also explore a few analytical tools to help us understand what sets these different versions apart. As we have quite a lot of music to play, please prepare a chosen part or two for each piece. The English composer and organist William Boyce (1711-1779) was well respected and immensely popular in his lifetime, but his symphonies and overtures were sadly neglected for many years after his death. Alaric Posey invites us to sample some of Boyce's musical legacy. This is a HYBRID meeting - you choose whether you wish to attend in person or over Zoom. | 2/10/2025 |  Medieval Mondays Spring Edition 2025NAVRS is excited to announce the continuation of Medieval Mondays taught by NAVRS music director Annette Bauer - thank you for your continued interest in medieval music! The Medieval Mondays Spring Edition 2025 runs from February to May in four sessions. Each class will focus on a particular medieval topic, composer, or musical source. A brief overview of the historical context is followed by a selection of music to discover and play together. Scores will be available for registered participants a week ahead of each class. Play-along files will be created on recorders. Each zoom meeting will be recorded and will stay available to view on demand until one full month after the final class of the series. She received her solo and teaching diplomas from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague where she studied recorder, harpsichord and electroacoustic composition. Hanneke is a co-founder of the Junior Recorder Society and together with Rotem Gilbert, directed the SFEMS Recorder Workshop (2010-2022) and the SFEMS Medieval Renaissance Workshop with Louise Carslake (2002-2008). She teaches recorder at UC Berkeley and has been guest professor at Stanford, Oberlin, The Juilliard School, and several other universities in the U.S. Together with David Tayler, Hanneke co-founded and co-directs Voices of Music, the most popular Early Music ensemble in America and was the first Early Music ensemble to receive the prestigious Silver Creator Award by YouTube. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Recorder and double reed player Rotem Gilbert is a founding member of Ciaramella, an ensemble specializing in music of the 15th and 16th centuries with recordings on the Naxos and Yarlung labels. Rotem was a member of Piffaro (1996-2007) and has appeared with many early music ensembles in the United States, Israel, Europe and South America. Rotem serves as Vice Dean of the Research and Scholarly Studies Division at USC’s Thornton School of Music and is Professor of Practice in Early Music and Musicology where she teaches early performance practice courses, Renaissance notation seminars, classes on women composers, and takes turns directing the USC Baroque Sinfonia. She grew up in early music, beginning her studies as part of Indiana University’s Pre-College Recorder Program, and later earned degrees in recorder performance from Oberlin Conservatory and Indiana University. Her teachers have included Eva Legene, Alison Melville, and Han Tol. Critics have praised Anne’s "fine technique and stylishness," "unexpectedly rich lyricism" (Letter V), and "dazzling playing" (Chicago Classical Review). Anne is a passionate and prolific teacher. In addition to teaching private, group, and online recorder lessons, Anne has led hundreds of recorder workshops across the United States. Faculty engagements have included Oberlin Conservatory’s Baroque Performance Institute, Indiana University's Pre-College Recorder Program, the San Francisco Early Music Society, the Amherst Early Music Festival, Virginia Baroque Academy, Mountain Collegium, Mideast, Pinewoods Early Music Week, and numerous American Recorder Society chapters.
