My Dorian Suite is an original work for soprano recorder, strings, and bass drum written in four movements, each inspired by scenes of medieval life. I composed it because in my country the recorder is often overlooked, and I wanted to highlight its expressive potential — an instrument I truly love. The suite begins with The Peasants, a rustic dance full of earthy rhythms, followed by Dance at the Festival, a lively jig in compound time. The third movement, The Nobles Arrive at Court, offers a slower, ceremonial atmosphere, and the work closes with Courtly Love, a lyrical and introspective meditation. Together, these movements invite performers and audiences on a journey through color, rhythm, and the timeless beauty of the Dorian mode.
Four scenes of medieval life as imagined by soprano recorder with strings and a stately bass drum. The melodies flow beautifully on the recorder, though it uses the full range of the instrument and regularly goes up to high C and D; the first two movements also fit on an F recorder, such as sopranino or alto reading at pitch.
