Tubular Oscillations is a piece for recorder orchestra characterized by various thematic waveforms, one of which is a half-step wave. Overall, the piece is upper intermediate to advanced level. Facility with scales containing B-flat, E-flat, and A-flat will be very helpful. The lower parts are somewhat easier. All parts have sections with difficult rhythms and/or fingerings, although an effort has been made to minimize this.

For special effect, pitch bending by overblowing the recorder to raise the pitch is featured on various lines. The raised tone should be sustained for approximately one beat before returning to normal pitch as indicated by the hairpins. If played with attention to tuning, it will sound pleasant. If not, well … a dyspeptic cow comes to mind (please do not sound like a dyspeptic cow). Accordingly, it is highly recommended that individual parts should be played solo when pitch bending. In this way, slight deviations from the targeted pitch can be managed.
