"Der Schauspieldirektor" ("The Impressario") is a spirited one-act comedy by W.A. Mozart (1756-1791) with musical numbers and mostly spoken dialogue, about an opera manager dealing with two vain prima donnas arguing over status and pay. It premiered in 1786 at a private luncheon in Vienna by Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II, as the German singspiel entry competing at one end of the room, against an Italian satire on opera buffa by Antonio Salieri (1750-1825), performed at the opposite end of the room. (No word on which was the winner.)
