An Elegy (Duet)

A lyrical duet in ternary form, An Elegy was composed in memory of friends who have unexpectedly passed. The piece balances sorrow with warmth, ultimately emphasizing the meaningfulness each person sustains in our memory of them. The beginning and ending sections, played slightly slower than the middle section, expresses the poignant and sharp sense of loss. The middle section, more joyful and confident, expresses the personality and relationship of the lives of those we lost, as they live on in our memory.

The Alto in the solo version is joined by a Bass in this new duo. The spontaneity in the solo can still infuse this duo, cultivating an intimacy between the parts that brings two hearts and minds together. The music can be lifted off the page with good communication between the players, allowing the music to stretch and recede in eddies of sound. A third flat has been added to the key from the solo, though most of the A-flats are naturalized.
