3 Alto Recorder Cadenzas

Alto Recorder

The idea of these short cadenzas is to seamlessly go from each movement of G.P. Handel's Recorder Sonata in F major to the next. The overall effect is to lengthen the Sonata and provide unexpected material in this very famous piece. And, since it is one of the easier sonatas, perhaps a chance to show off a little along the way.

“Unexpected” is the key word here, these three cadenzas connect the movements of Handel’s recorder sonata in F major, HWV369. The composer has stepped outside the box and created modern-sounding passages packed with rhythmic and chromatic interest, which he appropriately marks “challenging”. If you are playing the sonata with a continuo team, prepare them in advance that a completely different character is going to emerge, but keep the audience guessing to maximize the element of surprise. TECHNICAL NOTE: the half-step trill between upper C and D-flat at the end of the third cadenza can be achieved by playing D-flat as normal (Ø12-|4--) and trill on finger 6 (Ø12-|4-6) while regulating the breath to keep the C pitch in tune and prevent it from cracking. It is fragile!
