Elegy for One

Solo Recorder in F

This reflective piece says in sound my feeling from the passing of several who were close to me. Their loss set the mood as I composed the melody on an alto recorder.
--Steven Gordon

An easy, plaintive solo for Alto with a hint of longing in a minor mode. Just 25 measures, this piece invites a spontaneous and improvisatory style of playing, like the others in his collection and available in this Library, “Red Cedar” and “Smokedrift”. As in a Shakespeare soliloquy, the notes on the page are only a script to the storytelling, and it’s the player who infuses them with substance. Consider giving these a try and seeing how many different stories you can tell with the same notes. You’ll return to them over and over again.
