Klezmer Suite for Recorders

Klezmer Suite for Recorders includes four settings of traditional Klezmer tunes. They might be characterized as playful, pensive, yearning, and finally "living" - a range of meditative to dance.

These four movements for AATB celebrate the moods of life, as described by the composer. Fun Middle-Eastern modes with the iconic 1-1/2-step intervals (Eb-F# for example) keep the flavors of the rich tradition alive. Occasional intricacies of ensemble occur, leading to the composer's determination of the difficulty as "Challenging" but it has plenty of relaxing moments as well. Keys are quite suitable for recorders, and key changes occur in each dance. A rich and pleading second movement "Long Live the Nigun" has beautiful melodies intertwining above a steady Bass, inviting your most sonorous and emotional playing. Bass players will have a wonderful time with all of these movements, especially the jazzy rhythms in the 3rd dance, "Bulgar". The ranges of each instrument are almost fully utilized, from high E in the Alto and Bass and high B in the Tenor, to low F's and F#'s in the Alto and Bass and low C#'s in Tenor. Beware one rapid ornament in Alto 2 from G to Ab in the 4th dance, "Chava" ("Living") – a time when having a key for that note would be ideal.
