The uncertainty of a loved one's delayed flight in the oncoming darkness of evening is reflected in the hopeful nature of the melody. It's easy to imagine the composer sitting in the terminal, improvising on the recorder to pass the time. Spanning the gamut from low F to high Bb, the range sits mostly in the comfortable center of the instrument. Aside for one swelling gesture that follows the rise to the highest notes in the piece – a moment of anxiety, perhaps – there are no dynamics or phrase markings, allowing the piece to speak to each player in its own way.
