This piece freely varies a lively theme, or some parts of it, and uses familiar, tonal harmonies. It is playable by amateur consorts. (I know because, as noted in my Bio, I’m a member of an amateur consort and we have played this piece well.) The fantasia form is modeled on that of several English renaissance composers, but I am not aiming at sounding like any particular composer or period. I hope and believe that what follows the initial thematic material is varied enough to be interesting while remaining musically sensible as part of the same piece.

A delightful SATB quartet movement full of joy and accessible to all playing levels. As a Fantasia, the music goes through various moods, both fast and slow, and the character of the moment can change to suit. All parts sit in the comfortable range of their respective recorders, with Soprano going up to G. Straightforward rhythms and harmonies make this piece a good selection for an informal playing session, church service or chapter meeting. Dynamics and phrasing are not indicated, allowing the ensemble to create their own storytelling as they move through the piece.
