Composition -
'Mille regretz,' a Parody

The early 16th century saw the composition of numerous settings, vocal and instrumental, of the very popular late 15th-c. chanson, 'Mille regretz.' The present trio (ATT) introduces a number of harmonic anachronisms. It might be programmed to good effect with other settings of the tune, for instance those of Josquin des Prez or Thielman Susato. The Prince Consort performs on the accompanying recording. Duration: 2:10
-- Anthony St. Pierre

An easy ATT trio based on the late 15th-c pop tune attributed to Josquin and also set by Susato. Both composers’ influence can be heard in this new parody. All parts sit comfortably in the easy range of their respective instruments, and the Tenor 2 line fits nicely on a bass with just one high E. Our composer’s penchant for unexpected harmonies shines through here, with flats being the preferred accidental in all parts. Be sure to check out St. Pierre's other parodies of popular pieces from the late Medieval and early Renaissance, “El Grillo” and “Quam pulcra es."
