This is the second piece in a three-part feline roundup, preceded by Herding Kittens and followed by Herding Cheetahs. All three pieces share a common structure and thematic elements and get harder as their titles imply.

This second installment of the fun cool-jazzy “feline roundup” duet series picks up where “Herding Kittens” leaves off. The tempo here is a bit faster and the time signature is stretched to 5/4, creating a more grown-up version of the alto-bass dialogue. The swing playing style is still in effect, with a persistent 3+3+2+2 rhythm in the 8th-notes that may be tricky at first but will quickly feel natural. In the same key as the others, four flats, this middle piece has one high F in the alto and some low A-flats in the bass, but otherwise stays within the comfortable range of each instrument. Lots of chromatic ups and downs may take some practice to always land on your feet.
