This is the first piece in a three-part feline roundup, followed by Herding Cats and Herding Cheetahs. All three pieces share a common structure and thematic elements and get harder as their titles imply.

The “feline roundup” duet series pieces all have a fun syncopated bass line and jazzy swinging playing style with chromatic bits. Put your cool-jazz shades on and enjoy the melodic interplay of this first episode, “Herding Kittens”. The pieces are in four flats, which contributes to the composer’s label of “Challenging”, but that is actually a comfortable key that falls neatly under the fingers on F recorders. Watch for some low A-flats in the bass, and one high F in the alto. Although kittens can get up to some crazy antics, both parts stay well within the comfortable range, though with lots of accidentals, and chromatic triplets will have you reaching for the nearest beret.
