A generous person would call this a set of variations on the Stephen Foster classic Camptown Races. Others might counter that it is an irreverent injection of Foster's classic theme into the masterful works of Stravinsky, Bernstein, Brubeck, Desmon, and Ellington. You decide.
-- Chaz Warren
Another entertaining piece by Chaz Warren, this fantasia on “Camptown Ladies” runs the gamut from straightforward to flippant to melancholy to big-band swing. Lots of blurry harmonies and fun ensemble moments of rhythmic unity, some where double-tonguing might come in handy. As the composer mentions, brief recognizable quotes from other famous works occasionally appear, but they’ve been put through a funhouse mirror. Technical challenges include high notes as well as changes in character, tempo, key and meter, while tight ensemble writing keeps it all together. You’ll bet your money on the bobtail nag too, with this quartet!
