Deceptively simple, this beautifully impressionistic trio grows more satisfying with each playing, and is actually quite challenging for players to “lift off the page.” It has a laid-back and subtle contrapuntal structure with imitative flecks reminiscent of Palestrina, which are revealed if the players listen carefully to each other. Good communication also allows the players and audience to savor the ebb and flow of tempo and emotion. This music would also work well in a large-ensemble setting with a conductor.
