Inspiration (and instruction) for the Canon for Four Bass Recorders came from a study of Johann Georg Albrechtberger’s Gründliche Anweisung zur Composition, published in 1790. The Canon could also be played on four alto recorders to good effect. This amusing 4-voice canon is a wonderful example of weaving an engaging piece of music with the simplest of threads. Each new entry enriches the fabric, as the four independent melody lines cross and new shapes arise from these cross-relations.
