Drmeš (pronounced “DRR-mesh”) is a popular folk dance, or so-called shaking dance, from central Croatia. These variations were written in April 1999, based on a Croatian folk dance obtained from Jennifer Barron South. Jenny also did an arrangement of the piece along more traditional lines, but the present setting, while maintaining the Croatian melody with all its interesting meter changes, also uses ostinato (repeating bass pattern), somewhat modern harmonies, and percussive effects (one variation involves tapping the recorder).
