Originally a piano piece composed in 1978, the recording on my YouTube video dates from 1979 when I made an independent LP at EMI recording studios, Petone, Wellington, NZ. While frequently played at restaurants, I gave the original a new lease of life, when its melancholy sound with repetitive harmonies became the soundtrack for the first of my 2 YouTube videos highlighting the imminent demolition of an old brick church down the road from me. This and its successor (“Coptic Church Memory”) were to portray the sense of abandonment of what had once been a thriving community asset up to the early 2000’s.

Easy notes on the surface belie the emotional possibilities of performance of this slow accompanied soliloquy in Soprano. Poignant dissonances underscore the sense of abandonment described by the composer. Its repetitiveness can be hypnotic for the Bass player, and the inner voices console each other in tandem. Second line also fits comfortably on Tenor. Players will naturally take a long reflective pause when the music is done.
