“Cormorant Sunday” is one of a set of 3 piano solos I wrote in 1983 inspired by a seabird regularly flying over my home in Maupuia, near the windy eastern coast of Wellington, New Zealand. Despite the theme in common, all three compositions are quite different stylistically from each other, this one being more rhythmic and chordal in the accompaniment. The melody is heard 4 times, only changing somewhat in the CODA.
Like its companion “Cormorant Tuesday”, this beautiful simple melody in the Soprano or Tenor line is accompanied by rhythmic piano chords. This one is in A major and 5/4 meter (4 +1), moving slowly enough to give newer players time to think about the key and meter, and enjoy the lush sonorities.
