When Fairy-wrens Come Calling

Composed in 2008 as a landscape instrumental, this piece evokes the image of a flock of tiny Fairy-wrens with their ultra-long tails merging in with the long grass in a park near home. Dainty, fast-moving birds, here one minute, gone the next, the tune in this arrangement for SATB recorders has a slightly plaintive feel to it.

An easy, casual piece in D with soprano melody mostly in the lower part of the range. If you prefer to play it on an Alto reading up the octave, you will need to drop the first half of the Coda down- an easy solution but at the expense of the composer’s intended high statement of the melody. Inner voices get in on some of the action along the way, and the lilting bass line is fun to sink into and lose yourself. Occasional surprise dissonances recall the imagery of birds in the tall grass. This is a perfect piece for a fun afternoon playing music with friends.
