This piece is a memorial tribute to Andrew Charlton and Carl Dolmetsch, both of whom died in 1997. (Charlton died on May 27th at the age of 69 and Dolmetsch on July 11th at the age of 85). Since Charlton arranged a number of 19th–century songs and Dolmetsch was a Romantic at heart, Elegy is written in 19th–Century style, somewhat reminiscent of Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words. It should be played expressively with smooth–flowing eighth notes.
