Composition -
Extraordinary Ostinato

S A A T

The tongue-in-cheek title reflects a compositional technique rather than any particular mood. This one was written for our highly competent lead Recorder player who had previously been a trumpet player in the Sydney Opera Orchestra and an orchestral conductor in Wellington, New Zealand before becoming a high school music teaching colleague of the composer. As this recording by Fipple Flutes Four demonstrates, he got to play all the fast bits.
-- Kass Finlay McAuliffe

A peppy and upbeat little march-like piece with a fun and active bottom line (on Tenor), supported by a rhythmic “backup band” SAA trio. Your intonation skills are invoked between the Soprano and Alto 1 when they have unison bits in several spots. The composer gives this a difficulty rating of “moderate” because the bottom line on Tenor might take a bit of rehearsing to get it comfortable and clean.
