Poinciana Rag follows the pattern for Ragtime established by Scott Joplin and his contemporaries. Joplin and Morton both tell us that Rags should not be performed too fast, and that the melodic lines should flow. The repetition of each section is part of the pattern. Although the repetitions could be omitted, they offer possibilities for variations in dynamics and phrasing if desired.
