When the first Europeans came to the New World, they brought with them their culture – their songs and stories, their religion and values, their beliefs and ways of living. One of the surviving cultural "keepsakes" is El coloquio de los pastores, a Christmas play which dates, in unbroken tradition, from Renaissance Spain. The four tunes presented here are typical of the existing drama.
