My idea for this composition was to portray the day's dawning light, and within that light, a life busy with the energy of awakening nature. This piece follows a ternary format. The beginning and ending are reflective and evocative while the middle moves energetically. With a bpm in the low 60s, the middle can be slowed for easier playing or played at tempo to express energy.

This solo for Alto is an easy melody with chordal accompaniment for a guitar, lute, keyboard or maybe a small lever harp would be nice. Or, a friend playing Bass can play the chord roots every half-measure. The
broader opening and closing segments frame a busy section of 8 measures described as “the energy of awakening nature”. Quick little slurred flips interspersed with triplets sometimes have unexpected fingerings, but the relaxed tempo can be to your advantage as you get more familiar with it. Several low F#’s keep your fingers
disciplined and the highest note is C, meaning the solo also fits on a Tenor. Subtle changes in dynamics are marked as well, indicating moments of leaning into the oncoming melody, or swelling during a rapid gesture.
