New Year Pavane and New Year Galliard

SATB

The Pavane and the Galliard are variations on the same theme. The form is dances going back to the renaissance period, but I am not attempting to sound like music from that period.

The Pavane has a slow tempo and I don't think it will present any difficulties. The Galliard has a couple of tricky rhythms, but its main challenge is playing it as fast as indicated. However, it sounds fine at 120 bpm and I suggest playing it at that tempo at first, with gradual increases -- but never faster than it can be played well.

A Renaissance dance form with pleasing contemporary harmonies, this SATB Pavan-Galliard pairing is easy enough for your next New Year's gathering, perhaps to be played alongside Holborne's New Yeere's Gifte. All parts are active and engaging, staying right in the best part of each instrument's range. The top line is the melody and fits easily on an Alto reading up the octave, and the second line fits nicely on Tenor as well, with just one high B toward the end of the Pavan. In fact, the limited ranges of the parts make this piece an ideal candidate to be played on a Renaissance consort.
