The Cecily Miles Memorial Music and Art Camp (CMMMAC), formerly known as the Flute Sweet Flute and Recorder Camp, will be held from August 10-17 this year in beautiful Montclair, NJ.  Recorderists ages 10 to 17 are welcome, medium/high beginner through advanced (you would be surprised at how many strong intermediate and advanced young recorderists attend!).  Recorder students will have technique classes with professional recorderists, improve their skills on both C and F recorders, practice on recorders of various sizes, play consort music together and chamber music in mixed ensembles, study improvisation, and perform with our unique and extraordinary flute and recorder orchestra.  This year the camp welcomes all band and orchestra instruments; recorderists will have the opportunity to also pursue a secondary instrument if they have one and/or use our "quick start" program to try a new instrument. This one-week day camp includes indoor and outdoor recreation, one hour of visual arts class per day, snacks and frozen treats!

For more information and for registration forms, visit https://theglobalflutestudio.mymusicstaff.com/summer-camp-2026.

If your child was introduced to the recorder at school, enjoyed it, and would like to continue, our camp is the place to do it.

The Limit Does Not Exist: A Gentle Approach to Unconventional Notation and Recorder Techniques in the 20th and 21st Centuries
Since the 1960s, composers have found ways to include some rather unconventional techniques in solo and ensemble repertoire for the recorder. This exploration of tonal and rhythmic expression did not leave the recorder behind. Multiphonics, "prepared" instruments, glissandi, and countless other techniques are as suited to the recorder as they are for other instruments. This workshop will give players a chance to learn the terminology and notation that give us access to some of the standard 20th and 21st century repertoire; we'll study relevant excerpts and learn the techniques that keep us from limiting our scope to only the early repertoire. Most repertoire will be copyrighted and Jody will share excerpts on screen with permission from the publishers. A full repertoire list will be available about a month in advance, giving participants an opportunity to purchase full selections either before or after the workshop if they wish to see these excerpts in context.
Open to all levels, but techniques and notation are mostly appropriate for solid intermediate to advanced players with an interest in contemporary music.
