Tone and Phrasing (Soprano/Tenor): If you’ve taken an ARS Beginners’ class for soprano/tenor and are ready for the next step, this 2nd-level class is for you. The soprano gets a bad reputation for sounding shrill and squeaky! But the soprano (and tenor) is capable of being a beautiful solo instrument as well as an ensemble companion. This 4-session course taught by recorder player and musicologist Jennifer Carpenter will focus on sound/tone production and expressive phrasing. Conquer your fears of playing high notes and learn how expressive the soprano/tenor can be!

Attendees are expected to be able to play low C to high G (octave and a 5th including F#s and Bbs) and read those notes and general rhythmic patterns on the music staff. All music will be provided. You don’t need to be confident, just familiar with these skills - we’ll work on improving them further.

This class is available at no charge to ARS members, only. When registering, use the email address associated with your ARS membership. If you are not an ARS member, you may click HERE to join.  These classes are limited in size to allow for more interaction between the teacher and students. If you have already taken two or more of our Second Level classes, please wait until one week prior to the start of class to sign up, in order to allow a larger number of people to take advantage of these opportunities.

Dates:
Sunday, December 4th at 8 PM ET (7 PM CT; 6 PM MT; 5 PM PT)
Wednesday, December 7th at 8 PM ET (7 PM CT; 6 PM MT; 5 PM PT)
Sunday, December 11th at 8 PM ET (7 PM CT; 6 PM MT; 5 PM PT)

Most composers in New Spain during the 16th - 18th centuries were originally Spanish, but they drew from many sources for their varied musical styles, including indigenous American and African influences. This extraordinarily colorful, spirited, and diverse music includes a rich repertoire telling the story of Christmas. With an ensemble of singers, harp and guitar, strings, winds, and percussion, the Folger Consort celebrates the fusion of European, American, and African practices that formed a uniquely Latin American music. With special guests, vocal ensemble The Western Wind.

On this happy occasion Three Trapped Tigers (David Barnett and Tom Bickley) Recorder Duo perform our mixture of early and new music in a venue noted for a rich variety of experimental music. We’ll be presenting a conversation among pieces from the 14th c. Llibre Vermell, a plainchant hymn (Conditor Alme Siderum), and new works by Milos Raickovich and Gavin Bryars and improvisations on both renaissance and modern recorders, and some poems appropriate for the Winter Solstice. We’re delighted to share the evening with NBOKS! Their set is at 8 pm, ours is at 9 pm. We encourage you to attend both sets. We’re very grateful to Rent Romus for running this series and putting this evening together.

Given the increase in the number of COVID infections this winter, for the health and protection of everyone, we ask respectfully that you wear a KF94, KN95, or N95 quality mask, regardless of your vaccination status.

For those of you accustomed to Three Trapped Tigers performance in early music venues, we hope you’ll take this opportunity to hear us in this location. The gallery is a bright, reverberant space, and cool both in affect and temperature. So, do dress to stay warm.  If you’re coming from Powell BART/MUNI, the Luggage Store Gallery is on Market St. just past 6th St. (on the corner is GAI Chicken, then Taqueria Cancun, then the colorfully grafittied door to the Luggage Store Gallery. It’s a long flight of stairs but well worth the climb. I’m attaching a photo of the doorway (just look for the 509 Cultural Center Annex/Luggage Store Gallery sign. The door is immediately to the right of the sign).
