The world premiere of Mark Miller's Love Will Rise Again for choir, recorder, harmonium and piano, will be featured during the Harmonium Choral Society's Open Hearts weekend.
Dr. Anne Matlack leads the chorus, with Kristine Lamb, flute and recorder, and HRH Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil, harmonium. Miller's new work was commissioned by Kristine Lamb in memory of her brother, Bud Oddsen and will be premiered on June 3 with a repeat performance on June 5th.
On June 4th, the NJ premiere of the award winning documentary Pieces of Us, about LGBTQ+ hate crime survivors will be screened, with a post film discussion facilitated by the executive producer, Mark Von DerHeide. The Q&A discussion will also include two of the film's subjects: Mykel Dicus (a producer) and Prince Manvendra, India's first openly gay royal and a world advocate for human rights.

As a follow-up on ‘Accessorizing Your Adagios’ and a sonatas survey class, the focus in this 4-session course is on music by Arcangelo CORELLI, whose celebrated sonatas for violin and basso continuo were transcribed for alto recorder in the early 1700s, and for traverso in 1754.
We’ll dig into one each of the ‘church’ and ‘chamber’ sonatas and explore various questions of technique and interpretation, with a particular focus on free ornamentation. We all know that ornamentation is a great idea, and we’d all like to raise the bar on our personal skill at it, but we often feel stuck at a certain point. In these classes we’ll broaden our creative imaginations and technical skills through practical experimentation with melodic skeletons, harmonic underpinning, ornamental gestures, examples from the 18th century, and by thinking outside the boxes we’ve packed ourselves into.
For alto recorder players at an upper intermediate level or higher.
Flutists and other treble instrumentalists who wish to explore the repertoire are welcome.

Their approach is grounded in historical practice and influenced by the Deep Listening of Pauline Oliveros, and a love of music from diverse cultures and styles. Three Trapped Tigers perform on medieval, baroque and modern recorders to bring to life a wide array of sounds and music.
The title of the program comes from the Time Poem by Philip Whalen which they have realized as a recorder duo. The program will showcase diverse works from contemporary English composers by duos and solos by Gavin Bryars, Sir Michael Tippett, and Nicola LeFanu. 16th-century Bicinia from the Munich Ms 260 will mix with Bicinia by the contemporary Swiss composer, Ulrich Gasser and music by American composers Pauline Oliveros, Tom Bickley and Roy Sansom. Three Trapped Tigers has a great fondness for the music of the Trecento and will perform works by Landini as well. All this and more to delight you on this Saturday afternoon of the Berkeley Festival.

In the festival we have different activities, including masterclasses, young recorder players’ competition, lectures, concerts and other surprises. We also have a special guest – Bart Spanhove, who will not only give masterclasses but will also give a lecture about his specialty: Study Strategies.
The cost of Bart’s masterclass + his lecture + his concert is 60 euro. We are keeping the cost as low as possible to make the event accessible to all.
There are, however, many other activities that you can purchase tickets for if you don’t want to do a masterclass with Bart. We have a lecture about the Suzuki Recorder method, concerts and other surprises. Also our Suzuki Team that will give masterclasses to the young ones (from age 4) and everyone is invited, Suzuki or non-Suzuki.
Multiple time zones will be accommodated, and sessions will be recorded and available for a week after the event.

Mountain Collegium is back in person! After our collective multi-year hiatus from in-person workshops, Mountain Collegium will be held June 26 – July 2 on the beautiful Western Carolina University campus, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. There will be classes for recorders, viols, harps, sackbuts, and other early instruments in genres of Renaissance, baroque, folk music, and more. Participants will stay in the comfortable honors dormitory (in either double rooms with private bath or private room with bath shared between 2 rooms). Classes are held in common areas of the honors dormitory, which means instruments do not need to be hauled long distances through the elements or across uneven ground. The dining hall is next door and offers a wide variety of food. This is truly one of the best workshops in the country and is always welcoming to newcomers and long-time friends alike.
Articulation for Recorder and Flute Players

Have you ever wondered how to approach a piece of early music that has no articulation markings? Should we slur or tongue and in which context? What information can we take from the score that can help us decide?
This workshop aims to give you the means to make these decisions yourself through an examination of historical sources with simple, practical and fun exercises you can apply to any piece of music.
Emily O’Brien, a professional Recorder player from the Boston area, will perform three compositions by African-American composer Melika Fitzhugh: "Respiravisse in Perpetuo" was written for the Mollenhauer Helder modern tenor, commissioned for her album “Fantasies for a Modern Recorder”. It employs a breathing mantra as an expressive device, and explores the expanded range and dynamic possibilities of the modern recorder. “The past is just a story we tell ourselves” was composed this year, and is unusual in being an unaccompanied piece for the great bass recorder - a size more commonly found in ensemble settings. Her third piece, “Oracle” will be accompanied by a professional string quartet. It combines ideas of a chant or recitative found in earlier styles with more modern rhythmic textures and meter.
Montclair Early Music’s ensemble will play rarely performed music by African American composers, including William Grant Still, Julia Niebergall, and Nathaniel Dett.

About Emily O’Brien
Emily O’Brien is a native of Washington, DC where she played recorder from a young age. She studied recorder and french horn at Boston University, and recorder and Baroque flute at the Hochschule für Musik in Karlsruhe, Germany. She performs in recorder ensembles and historical chamber music, as well as English Country Dance bands. She has recorded a variety of repertoire but with a particular focus on exploring the wide range of possibilities offered by the Helder Harmonic tenor recorder. As a teacher, she works with private students and ensembles in the Boston area as well as teaching at various summer workshop such as CDSS’s Early Music Week at Pinewoods and Amherst Early Music Festival. During the pandemic, Emily has recorded many multi-track videos and solo pieces, some of which may be found via her YouTube channel. In her spare time, she enjoys long distance cycling.
