Note: These online sessions are once per week on Tuesday evenings, 6:00 p.m. ETThe recorder has a reputation as an easy instrument to play.Those who already play, though, usually agree that it’s an easy instrument to start, but a difficult instrument to master.If you’ve gotten past your first few notes and are ready to accelerate your progress, you’re probably ready for Recorder Therapy.We will take one or two topics per session (all suggested by class participants) and delve into them.We’ll approach each topic from the most basic level, but we’ll also look beyond where we are and prepare for applying these skills in a more challenging way.We’ll learn details that really matter to you.Sessions will be split between interactive discussions and playing instruments.Based on topics, music could be exercises, etudes, solos, or ensembles.The class will be presented for both soprano and alto recorder players simultaneously.Participants will be encouraged to have and use both, but progress won’t be hindered if you play only one size at this time.

Take your recorder playing beyond the novice level in this class that is aimed at recorder players who basically know just a few notes. We’ll spot-check where you are with the left-hand notes (G-A-B-C-D), but our true starting point will be with the right-hand notes. Each session will contain musical exercises to help you improve specific techniques AND tunes so you can hear how your hard work pays off!

Now that you’ve learned some basic recorder playing skills, it’s time to apply yourself and start doing what makes most recorder players “tick”—play in groups. This series of virtual classes can prepare you to jump in and participate in ensemble playing, whether with your local ARS chapter, a community recorder ensemble, or one of the many weekend or weeklong workshops offered throughout the year. We’ll learn mostly (but not exclusively) Renaissance music, tackling dances, vocal pieces frequently played on instruments, and many of the other types of tunes that help push you up to the level you need to be.
Participants should have comfort with at least an octave of notes on soprano, alto, or tenor recorder. We will have some opportunities for bass, but bass players should also be able to play another size. Technical demands will be kept reasonable for the “emerging” level player, but you’ll also be challenged to learn different time signatures, styles, articulations, and more.
This six-week series is $90. All music will be provided. Participants should acquire other materials before the first class session.

Join me for a survey of four sonatas from different regions of the Baroque Eurozone, all written for the alto recorder. We’ll look at sonatas by Telemann, Mancini, Parcham and van Wassenaer, all of which prompt the usual questions about tempo, articulation, ornamentation, etc., but also contain ’magic moments’ that draw upon our creative imagination.
With an hour on each piece there’s just enough time to get our feet wet, but you’ll leave each session with a greater musical curiosity, and lots of ideas to guide a deeper dive into the music.
For alto recorder players at an upper intermediate level or higher.
Flutists and other treble instrumentalists who wish to explore the repertoire are welcome.
Music and mp3s of the bass line provided.
Pitch: 440 and 415 (bass lines provided at both).

Assuming you know at least 4 or 5 notes using your left hand, we'll start with some tips for improving tone, finger dexterity, and those right hand notes that sometimes drive new recorder players bonkers. Following the success of last year's online event, on March 19, the ARS will hold a Zoom webchat with Erik Pearson, composer of the 2022 Play-the-Recorder Month piece, Fanfare: returning. RS introduces a Free Online Beginners’ Reading Music Course geared primarily for non-music readers or people who are rusty, having had only a skirting exposure to rudimentary music reading skills. Professional recorder player and teacher Lawrence (Larry) Zukof will lead you through this four session course and help you learn the fundamentals of reading music using a variety of simple tunes and rhythms and demystify how pitch and rhythm are translated into music symbols. A Virtual Workshop with Glen Shannon

The late 1960’s were an experimental time for nearly everything, including recorder composers. The bass recorder was still a rare and exotic beast, tenor recorders only had one key, historical performance of Renaissance and Baroque music was in its infancy, and the ensemble music reflected the free-wheeling culture of the times. In this workshop we will explore some of the more iconic recorder compositions composed during the decade 1960-1970, by Arnold Cooke, Ferdinand Bruckmann, Andrew Charlton, The Beatles, and others. Rhythmic unity and disunity abound, and new harmonies flow freely. We will have two sessions with a lunch break between. In the first session we will work on original recorder compositions from the era, and in the second session we will have fun with my own recorder arrangements of popular favorites from the Beatles’ “Blue Album”, The Beatles/1967-1970, when they were hippies and wrote their songs under the influence of LSD.
Workshop level intermediate and above, familiarity with accidentals a plus!

Note: These online sessions are once per week on Tuesday evenings, 6:00 p.m. ETThe recorder has a reputation as an easy instrument to play.Those who already play, though, usually agree that it’s an easy instrument to start, but a difficult instrument to master.If you’ve gotten past your first few notes and are ready to accelerate your progress, you’re probably ready for Recorder Therapy.We will take one or two topics per session (all suggested by class participants) and delve into them.We’ll approach each topic from the most basic level, but we’ll also look beyond where we are and prepare for applying these skills in a more challenging way.We’ll learn details that really matter to you.Sessions will be split between interactive discussions and playing instruments.Based on topics, music could be exercises, etudes, solos, or ensembles.The class will be presented for both soprano and alto recorder players simultaneously.Participants will be encouraged to have and use both, but progress won’t be hindered if you play only one size at this time.
This six-week course is $90.All music examples will be provided.Participants should acquire materials before the first class session.
Required materials:
- Music stand
- At least a soprano or alto; both a soprano AND alto, if possible (tenor in place of soprano is OK)
- A metronome
- Good computer headphones or speakers

4-week session: Wednesday March 9, 16, 23 and 30, 2022Classes start at 10:30 AM, 1:30PM, or 7 PM, ET
Join me for a survey of four sonatas from different regions of the Baroque Eurozone, all written for the alto recorder. We’ll look at sonatas by Telemann, Mancini, Parcham and van Wassenaer, all of which prompt the usual questions about tempo, articulation, ornamentation, etc., but also contain ’magic moments’ that draw upon our creative imagination.
With an hour on each piece there’s just enough time to get our feet wet, but you’ll leave each session with a greater musical curiosity, and lots of ideas to guide a deeper dive into the music.
For alto recorder players at an upper intermediate level or higher.
Flutists and other treble instrumentalists who wish to explore the repertoire are welcome.
Music and mp3s of the bass line provided.

Soprano Recorder, Step 3Wednesday evenings, March 30–April 27: 7:30–8:30 PM ET
Take your soprano playing past the beginning level by expanding your range in the high register as well as learning some exercises to help develop good technique. In addition to working in a variety of major and minor keys, we’ll learn some duets and quartets. Four-week session is $60.
