Ut Re Mi: Solfège in Renaissance Music Virtual Recorder Workshop

Remember singing Do Re Mi from The Sound of Music? That is a song about “solfège” or “solfeggio”, a system of using syllables to learn the sounds of notes and scales. In early music, the first note was “ut”, not “do”. Renaissance music is filled with examples based on solfège, cleverly disguised in polyphonic texts and musical lines, or standing out clearly as a cantus firmus. Join us on a virtual adventure to learn about where solfège came from and experience how Renaissance composers cleverly wove it into their music. Players and singers of all levels and instruments of all sizes are welcome! Workshop pitch is 440.

The Pensacola Early Music Festival will take place November 11-13, 2022 at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church. The cost is $60.00 to cover the cost of music and food during the weekend (Friday evening, Saturday noon and Sunday noon).This is a weekend to prepare a concert to show off the recorder orchestra and the Renaissance Band. Pensacola is open to new sounds and over the past few years the Pensacola Early Music Consort has worked to present early instruments in concert to showcase music from the Mediaeval, Renaissance and Baroque periods. We have also included works from the Celtic tradition and works of modern composers for early instruments. I hope you can come and brings others with you. The Pensacola Early Music Consort is the sponsoring organization. Attached is our planned program. We can send you music in advance should you decide to come. We will rehearse on Friday evening, Saturday morning through early afternoon, and then give a concert on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.

A workshop focused on the elements of a polished consort performance, using repertoire related to the music to be performed at Sunday’s concert. The lute ensemble, led by Sylvain Bergeron, will focus on ensemble skills, ornamentation and improvisation, playing from new arrangements of Arcadelt madrigals, selections from Attaignant’s book of French chansons and more.  The recorder ensemble, led by Vincent Lauzer, will play French and English consort music to work on ensemble skills, phrasing, tempo, dynamics, articulation and ornamentation. A segment of the recorder day will be devoted to vocal music arranged for instruments, with Grace Srinivasan providing insights into how a vocalist looks at performing this music.

Recorder players at this workshop should be able to play either SATB or SAT and alto up an octave.

Courante, a baroque chamber ensemble from Cape Cod, MA, will present “Music for a While” featuring soprano Joan Kirchner, Saturday November 19 at 3:00PM, at the Federated Church of Hyannis, 320 Main St., Hyannis, MA.

This program features songs and dances by Henry Purcell, corrente by Giovanni Battista Buonamente, songs from Claudio Monteverdi’s Scherzi Musicali, and cantatas by Georg Philipp Telemann and Antonio Caldara. It showcases Cape Cod’s premier soprano Joan Kirchner, accompanied by the instrumentalists of Courante. The unpublished and little-known Caldara cantata “Innocente cor mio” was transcribed and edited from manuscript by Molly Johnston as her pandemic project.

Members of Courante include Jan Elliott, recorder, David Gable, violin, Molly Johnston, viola da gamba, and Brittany Lord, harpsichord.

Music (“diverse, brilliant and thoroughly enjoyable”) of the Loeillet Cousins, Jean Baptiste Loeillet de Gant (1688-c1720) and John Loeillet of London, (1680-1730) Recorder Virtuosi of the early 18^th Century.  Led by Lewis R. • November 21, 2022. Rhetoric in Musical Expression in the late 16^th, 17^th and 18^th Centuries. We will focus on melodic devices and ornamentation based on rhetorical principles. Led by Lewis R. Baratz. 
• December 19, 2022.  Musical Traditions of Ireland and the Tin Whistle. Interpreting Irish folk music.  Bring your soprano, or tin whistle in D, or purchase an inexpensive tin whistle in D online, made by Generations, from Lark in the Morning Guitar Center, or even a Walmart Superstar. Good for beginners, only about $12. Led by Lewis Baratz, with Nathan Bishop, violinist and Irish fiddler.
