ARTEK brings the New York audience yet another magnificent tour de force: the landmark 1619 publication of Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643), TheCompleteMadrigals, Book 7. Monteverdi's publication marks his first book to contain a new style of madrigal composition, ranging from madrigals with concerted instruments to intimate solos, duets and trios, to the dramatic mini-opera, Tirsi e Clori. Join us for both evenings to hear the full range of Monteverdi's genius! ARTEK has been recording this repertoire since spring 2017 and will finish the recording just prior to these concerts; release of the 2-CD set is expected in fall 2019.
The ensemble features singers Laurie Heimes, soprano; Clara Rottsolk, soprano; Barbara Hollinshead, mezzo-soprano; Ryland Angel, countertenor/tenor; Andrew Fuchs, tenor; Philip Anderson, tenor; Jacob L. Perry, tenor; and Peter Becker, bass-baritone. ARTEK's string ensemble will be led by world-renowned Italian baroque violinist Enrico Gatti with Vita Wallace, violin; Theresa Salomon, viola; John Moran, bass violin; Arnie Tanimoto, bass violin; Rosamund Morley, viola da gamba; Lisa Terry, viola da gamba; Motomi Igarashi, violone and lirone. ARTEK's renowned continuo team will be Daniel Swenberg, theorbo and guitar; Grant Herreid, lute and theorbo; Adam Cockerham, theorbo; Arash Noori, theorbo and guitar; Christa Patton, harp and recorder; Dongsok Shin, harpsichord; and Gwendolyn Toth, harpsichord and director. The large size of the continuo team will allow ARTEK to match as closely as possible Monteverdi’s written directions for a sumptuous continuo section of multiple players.
The two concerts are a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear this repertoire live with ARTEK's accomplished Monteverdi specialists. Tickets: reserved seating from $15-$75 with discounts for seniors and under 25.

ARTEK, founded by director Gwendolyn Toth in 1986, features America’s finest singers and instrumentalists in performances of 17th and 18th century repertoire from Italy and Germany. Audiences love ARTEK concerts for their exciting, dramatic performances of baroque music, with compelling musical settings of beautiful poetry and infectious dance rhythms that infuse the performances with vitality and spirit. In addition to acclaimed performances of I’ll Never See the Stars Again, highlights of past seasons include standing-ovation performances to sell-out crowds at the Regensburg (Germany) Tage Alter Musik Festival (1998 and 2003) and debut performances at the prestigious Boston Early Music Festival (2003) and the Berkeley Early Music Festival (2010). ARTEK toured internationally from 1997 to 2002 with the Mark Morris Dance Group, visiting major venues in the United Kingdom, Italy, and Canada as well as more than 50 of America’s premier theaters. ARTEK’s recordings of Monteverdi’s Orfeo , Monteverdi’s Madrigals Book V and other early Italian repertoire have been widely praised; the ensemble’s 2017 recording project is Monteverdi’s Madrigals, Book VII.
