Serie takes its name from the Spanish word meaning "series" or "row". The title was suggested by the structure of the piece, which takes the material found in the first part of the opening movement and subsequently presents it in retrograde (backwards), inversion (mirror image), and retrograde inversion (backwards and in mirror image).
