Nun danket Alle Gott (Now Thank We All Our God)
Lobe den Herren (Praise to the Lord)
Ein' feste Burg (A Mighty Fortress)

These are easy settings of three Lutheran chorales well known in all the mainstream churches. Bach set them for organ and composed cantatas based upon them. In the present set, the tunes pass from one voice to another. Each setting features a modest amount of melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic variation. They might be combined with any of the three-voice chorale settings of Michael Prætorius and presented as a prelude or postlude to a church service. A distant cousin of J.S. Bach, Johann Walther, also set chorale trios. These were for the organ, but arrangements for recorders were published in the Zeitschrift für Spielmusik vol. 169 along with similar repertoire by Buxtehude, and Zachow. (After World War II, recorders at times stood in for organs that had been bomb damaged, giving rise to this Zeitschrift… publication.)

Beautiful and easy trios (ATB, no Soprano) of famous hymns, with the occasional fun harmonic twists our arranger is so known for. There are a couple 16th-note bursts in the third chorale, “Ein’ feste Burg”, but overall this little collection is perfect for groups at any playing level, and is very well suited for practicing your sight-reading as well as learning Alto fingering if you currently only play Soprano. Each piece is just 1 or 2 pages of score, very large and legible.
