Fantazia 11 is the eleventh of fifteen Fantasias Purcell composed in a short period of time in 1680. It’s in three distinct sections. The opening section is breathtakingly luscious with soaring melodies and emotionally moving harmonies. The second section would be called static were in not for the interesting and unexpected shifts in harmonies. The last section is a romp, difficult in every way and worth the effort. The viol fantasias as a set are some of Purcell’s best and most interesting compositions.
