“Tant que vivray” by Claudin de Sermisy on a poem by Clément Marot is an archetypical mid 16th c. Parisian Chanson. Songs by Sermisy and his contemporaries (including Certon and Janequin) are characterized by their directness and simplicity. They were most often homophonic, using few long melismas or contrapuntal sections. The songs were set with attention to the natural rhythm of spoken words.
