Composition -
Folia Pastorale Nos. 1 & 2
By Anthony St. Pierre October/Decembe

In the course of composing many sets of Folia variations (all those for recorders are available through the ARS libraries), the composer has written some variants that he could not include in a set, but which he consigned to a folder labelled "Foliage." Such are these two brief pastoral numbers. No. 1 is set largely to a ground of descending thirds, while in No. 2, the perfect fourth figures prominently in the melody. Both are rather easy essays suitable for informal playing. But pay particular attention to tuning where chords have flats or sharps.

Combined duration: 3:00

The composer performs on the multi track recording that accompanies this score.

Inspired by the Folia ground bass but viewed through a fun-house mirror, this pair of thoroughly enjoyable and accessible short movements will delight and intrigue with their surprising harmonies. Bass players can look forward to high E, F and G, but those only appear once (twice for E) and most of today’s instruments can reach those notes with little effort.
