Last Saturday

I composed Last Saturday to evoke the feeling of a warm weekend morning, with blue skies, soft light, maybe the scent of pine in the air, and a peaceful ambiance of a day about to unfold.

As a gentle, lyrical duet for two tenor recorders, Last Saturday is set with a Larghetto dolce tempo and expression. The music moves in smooth, singing phrases supported by a harmony centered on A minor, giving the piece a calm, reflective atmosphere. Both parts share similar contours and remain in a comfortable register for the tenor recorder, making the duet easy to play while still asking for expressive playing.

An easy, playable duet for Tenors that keeps within the comfortable upper range, but get ready for a lot of low C's! If you're having trouble with the low C on your instrument, this is the piece for you, both parts have plenty of them, including drops down from upper notes. Some slight rhythmic complexities appear, such as three instances of triplet 8ths and one in each part of a dotted-8th-16th. These add interest to a lovely flowing exchange of equal partners trading off the melody and accompaniment – you get to decide which is which! Note that the composer does request some expressive dynamics and stretchy ritards, providing opportunities for greater emotional depth in the performance.
