The Old Avoca Schoolhouse in Avoca, Nebraska will be streaming three online “Playford English Country Dance Tunes Workshops” for soprano recorder players, alto recorder players, fiddlers, violists, cellists, bassists, and mandolinists.

The Workshops will be on Tuesday, August 8, 7 PM, Central Time, Wednesday, August 9, 10 AM, Central Time, and Friday, August 11, 7 PM, Central Time.  Different tunes will be played at each session.

John Playford (1623–1686/7) was a London bookseller, publisher, and composer. He is best known today for his publication of The English Dancing Master in 1651.

We will read, play, and discuss various survival skills for these charming pieces.  A treble clef version of the sheet music for the tunes being played will be displayed on the screen during the workshop.

Just as in all of the collections in the Tunes for Two series these books contain the same tunes in the same keys making it easy for you to play with a friend playing another instrument.

There is limited enrollment, and pre-registration is required.  The cost for each workshop is $10.00. The cost of each optional book is $15.00 (includes shipping if ordered with workshop registration).

A performance by shakuhachi and recorder duo Gusty Winds May Exist (Nancy Beckman, shakuhachi, and Tom Bickley, recorder). The event is open to the public at no cost, and will last about 45 minutes. We'll play solos from the traditional Japanese Myoan Shakuhachi repertory and the early European recorder repertory that evoke images of the natural world, birdsong, waterfalls, and the wind. Improvised duos and solos respond to those pieces and to the environment. We approach this as a meditative offering for a summer evening at sunset.

We’ll perform at The Cove, which is very easy to get to from the entrance to the Bulb. This link also shows the exact location on Google Maps.

Ut Re Mi: Solfège in Renaissance Music

Remember singing Do Re Mi fromThe Sound of Music? That is a clever song about solfège or solfeggio, the system of using syllables to learn the placement of notes in scales. In early music, the first note of the scale was called “ut”, not “do” as we know it today. Many Renaissance compositions were based on solfège, either artfully disguised in polyphonic texts and musical lines, or standing out clearly as a cantus firmus. This workshop will take you on a musical adventure to learn where solfège came from and experience how Renaissance composers creatively wove it into their music.

An Archeological Dig

Join us as Glen takes us on a historical expedition of the American Recorder Society (ARS) “catacombs”. We will explore early editions of the ARS member’s library and celebrate the important historical figures in the ARS who created them, including Erich Katz, Jennifer W. Lehmann, and David Goldstein. The ARS is commemorating the 50th anniversary of the death of Erich Katz (1900-1973), who was one of the most important people in the American recorder movement in the 20th century. Grab your fedora and your recorder and come along on our journey, searching for some lost art!
